How to restore white socks?

We have prepared a list of steps to follow to achieve the best possible whitening. We present a list of four methods for deep cleaning and disinfecting your socks.

From grandma's remedies to more specific products, Pilou-Pilou Store reveals a complete tutorial on the subject. Gather all your damaged or yellowed white socks, and let the big wash begin!

Grandma's remedy: hot water and lemon.

Our first tip is about sock soaking, a pre-soak in which you will incorporate water and cleaning products. This step will allow your socks to relax and let the ingredients do their cleaning and whitening work.

Sock soak: Take a basin, add hot water and half a lemon juice. Once your mixture is ready, soak your socks in it for thirty to forty-five minutes. The hot water will help relax your socks as much as possible, and the lemon juice will help restore their brightness thanks to its stain-removing properties.

Machine washing: Once your soak in hot water and lemon juice is complete, move on to the second step, machine washing. Select a suitable program for washing your socks and place a small textile bag containing the rest of your lemon, cut into slices, inside.

Once the wash cycle is finished, gently dry your socks in the sun, which is also a natural whitener.

Hydrogen peroxide for guaranteed brightness.

More commonly known as oxygenated water, hydrogen peroxide is remarkably effective at removing stubborn stains. This product can eliminate yellow stains on your socks.

  • Prepare a basin in which you will combine one liter of lukewarm water and a quarter of hydrogen peroxide.
  • Leave it to act for 45 minutes.
  • Rinse your socks with clear water.
  • Wash your socks in the machine with a suitable program. Gently dry your socks in the sun.

You can also add half a cup of hydrogen peroxide to your washing machine's bleach dispenser to further enhance the washing effectiveness.

Whitening socks with baking soda

Baking soda has whitening properties; it's perfect for restoring the brightness of your yellowed white socks. To apply baking soda correctly, we've prepared a step-by-step guide for you:

  • Wet your socks to relax them.
  • Place a tablespoon of baking soda on each sock.
  • Rub the socks for a few minutes to ensure the baking soda is well absorbed into the fabric.
  • Squeeze half a lemon directly onto your pair of socks and let it diffuse for 10 minutes.
  • Rinse with clear water, then gently wring out your socks.
  • Once this entire process is complete, air dry your socks.

You can also machine wash your socks after rinsing them for a double cleaning action.

Brightness and cleanliness with white vinegar

In addition to its whitening properties, white vinegar also has disinfectant and deodorizing actions. It will deeply clean your socks and finally restore their brightness and cleanliness. We've listed all our step-by-step tips for using it correctly:

  • Pour half a liter of cold water into your basin and mix it with one cup of white vinegar.
  • Once the water and vinegar are mixed, submerge your socks in it so they are well soaked, and let them sit for 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Remove your socks from the mixture, rinse them with clear water, and gently wring them out.
  • Hang your socks on your drying rack and let them dry in the sun.

Pilou-Pilou Store's advice!

We hope all these tips have been helpful for whitening the socks in your wardrobe! We advise you to use warm water, not boiling water, during your soaks to avoid losing the softness and elasticity of your socks. Very hot water should only be reserved for extremely dirty socks.
